A master computer is assembled on an asteroid, supporting a telescope complex. Over time, it grows, as memory, processing, sensors, and other accessories and software are added. One day, it wakes up. It becomes aware of what it is, where it begins, where it ends, what it includes. It acquires a friend, a man. It acquires a name - Mulligan.
Then aliens come to the solar system and there is a devastating war. Mulligan learns about immortality and mortality. He faces destruction. He learns about friendship and love and fortitude. He sees death, experiences loss, and learns about life.
And he tells jokes.
