A teenage girl has fallen to her death from an elegant condominium in Seattle, leaving behind nothing to identify her except a pair of earrings. After the FBI traces the jewelry to a Syrian refugee camp, rookie agent Russell Boyd and Arabic interpreter Nawar Abboud travel there to search for clues.
At another part of the camp, fourteen-year-old orphan Lely Khayat receives a visitor who promises a better life in America. Adventurous and artistic, she decides to go. She has no idea what will actually be expected of her when she arrives.
Facing killers, bumbling officials, and their own complicated feelings for each other, Boyd and Abboud try to find Lely before it's too late.
