Social Mission of Law

Law without a social mission is no law. This is the theme of this book written by one of India's most eminent jurists. Many facets of this theme, viewed from national and international angles, and focussing on the panorama of Life, Law and Justice, are covered here. Reformation of the criminal through the judicial process, social change through law, access to legal remedies for the downtrodden, revision of the Hindu and Muslim personal law are the issues raised and discussed in a largely Indian context. This book should stimulate the legal community in India to a greater awareness of their appointed tasktheir tryst with destiny as it were.The author, V. R. Krishna Iyer, has had a brilliant and varied career, during which he has been a state minister in Kerala and was also appointed a high court judge there later. A national assignment brought him to Delhi in 1971 as a member of the Law Commission. In 1973 he was elevated to the Supreme Court. A widely travelled man who has written profusely on law and cultural affairs, among his other books are Law and the People and Law, Freedom and Change.
