A servant of the palace at Shadovane is charged with maintaining clean and orderly operations for the noble elites who live there. Few places are off limits to them, and they know many reaches of the palace better than most of the city's soldiers. They may never enter the Royal Library; they are barred from entering a nobles apartments or the dungeons without escort; and they may never, under any circumstances, descend a certain staircase. The rumors say no one who has ever gone down there has returned.
Lance is not like other servants. He has long had nightmares about someone else's past. He fears the soldiers who are meant to keep him safe...fears the shadows whose secrets they keep.
He has never known peace. Not really. Not here.
While the other servants go about their duties, questions swirl about in his head. Was he given freely to the palace as the nobility claims, or is there a family in some distant land waiting for him to come home? Worrying about the child they lost?
His worries plague him, and more and more he is drawn to the forbidden staircase, until he can see no other way to get the answers he seeks but to break the taboo upon it. What he finds in the bowels of the palace is unspeakable horror, and the only remedy for what he has seen, what it means, is escape.
