We have summarized the essential of this book by the author.
In the contemporary theory of democracy, 3 great traditions of political thought converge: 1- CLASSICAL THEORY: Aristotelian theory of the 3 forms of government, where democracy, as the government of all citizens, is distinguished from the monarchy (government of one ) and the aristocracy (government of few). 2- the MEDIEVAL THEORY: of popular sovereignty, which contrasts the Ascending Theory (power comes from the people) with the Descending (power derives from the prince, transmitted by delegation from the superior to the inferior). 3- the MODERN THEORY: Machiavellian Theory, arises with the modern monarchical State; there would be two forms of government, the monarchy and the republic (the latter is equivalent to democracy).
