However, Lincoln never said this, and most certainly did not believe it. He was perfectly willing to see Southern slavery persist past his own lifetime as long as the Southern states remained in the Union and continued to pay federal taxes. #2 The second myth is that Lincoln saved the Union. In reality, Lincoln did more than any other individual to destroy the voluntary union of the founding fathers. The states had delegated certain powers to the federal government, but they had preserved their sovereignty. #3 Lincoln was a supremacist who opposed equality for black people. He also illegally suspended the writ of habeas corpus and imprisoned tens of thousands of Northern political opponents. #4 Lincoln was a great humanitarian, but a great humanitarian does not manipulate his own people into starting one of the bloodiest wars in history. Humanitarians do not become obsessed with allocating tax dollars to the development of more powerful and more devastating weapons of mass destruction.
