Summers with Ladybugs is a true story about my life.
The story walks the reader through my journey with an abusive man and how I broke free and changed my life. It is thought provoking as well as educational for those who are either in an abusive situation, or for those who are aware of an abusive situation taking place.
The story explains how I went from being an assertive and confident young woman to slowly becoming a meek and feeble victim of domestic abuse. My case was viewed as one of the worst cases of emotional abuse that the judge had ever seen. The book explains how the downward journey happened and most importantly, it allows the reader to share in my thoughts, knowledge as well as hind-sight in the hopes that I can help to empower others in a similar position in life.
The journey begins with Aubrey Carter winning the popular Student Council President of her high school, and towards the end of her school year, she begins to fall in love with the school degenerate.
After hoping that she can help to change and nurture him with patience and understanding, she finds herself slipping into a dangerous lifestyle with her husband.
Aubrey tries to leave her abusive husband early in the marriage; however, her parents did not want to see a divorce happen as they viewed it as an 'embarrassment 'to the family. She pressed on and the husband spirals out of control until he finally overpowers her, grabbing hold of her wrists and making her use her own 'fists' to punch herself perpetually in her own face. After reaching out for help at a Battered Woman's Shelter, clear instructions were given to Aubrey in order to prepare to leave. Knowing it would be a long and difficult road, she goes back to her husband and begins the process required to leave the domestic violence situation.
After Tony, Aubrey's husband, threatens to kill her, she escapes and makes her way to the police to have her husband arrested. Tony manipulates the situation as well as her family, and manages to put everyone against Aubrey, resulting in her taking him back. The husband promises to take counselling sessions and court ordered classes for violent men.
After Tony attempts to drown their son in the family swimming pool, Aubrey finally divorces him.
The rest of the story explains how many difficulties Aubrey finds herself in, as Tony pairs up with a drug-addicted woman who acts as his puppet to perform masterminded schemes against her.
Aubrey finally meets the deepest darkness point in her life when Tony and his partner Amber invent a fool-proof scheme to have her arrested and charged with attempted murder. Aubrey finds herself in the worst situation possible to prove her innocence.
With four children to raise on her own, one of them who was severely disabled, and another who survived a fatal car accident, Aubrey explains her journey of survival and perseverance to become the successful and triumphant woman that she is today.
