MOST Christian apologetic books help the reader know WHAT to say; THE CHRISTIAN APOLOGIST is HOW to communicate it effectively. The Christian apologist's words should always be seasoned with salt as he or she shares the unadulterated truths of Scripture with gentleness and respect. Our example in helping the unbeliever to understand the Bible has been provided by Jesus Christ and his apostles. Whether dealing with Bible critics or answering questions from those genuinely interested, Jesus referred to the Scriptures and at times used appropriate illustrations, helping those with a receptive heart to accept the Word of God. The apostle Paul "reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving" what was biblically true. (Ac 17:2-3) The material in THE CHRISTIAN APOLOGIST can enable us to do the same.
Apologist Normal L. Geisler informs us that "evangelism is planting seeds of the Gospel" and "pre-evangelism is tilling the soil of people's minds and hearts to help them be more willing to listen to the truth (1 Cor. 3: 6)." Conversation Evangelism, p. 22. Yes, pre-evangelism is apologetics, i.e., defending the Word of God and the faith. The apostle Peter says that Christians are to "honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." (1 Peter 3:15)
