The Engine Room is a book about prayer for children. It is a story about a character called Philo Fitzgerald, who is six years old and has to live with his grandparents after both his parents die in a car accident.
The story is about his very close relationship with his father, Theo J Fitzgerald, who leaves Philo a final letter. Before the accident, his father had a long-term medical condition (A Brain Aneurysm) that forced him to treasure every day as a gift. He writes Philo a secret farewell letter every year, just in case.
His relationship with his grandma, Grandma Beau, encapsulates the warmth, love and power of a relationship that blossoms despite personal tragedy. The Engine Room teaches us to place great value on relationships, firstly with our heavenly father and then with the people He has placed in our lives.
