THE GIRLS OF ST CATHERINE'S

If you think that boarding schools are always bad, then read this for fun and games.

Miss Clarissa Crochet (NOT pronounced Crotchet) is a free-spirited Headmistress at St Catherine's Girls' School, a private education institute, where her motto is to be Free, Firm and Fair in all that she does. She encourages her young girls to embrace her ideals, educating them about the will to win, no matter how but usually fairly, and if you are going to do something naughty, do not get caught.

The novel follows a year in the lives of the girls and the school from explosive Science lessons to teachers whose cars that take on lives of their own, from a tights-splitting production of Romeo and Juliet to the manufacture and sale of gin by the girls. On the sports field, St Catherine's will have the nuns from the visiting private school fiddling with their rosary beads during a hockey match, but the match is played within some of the rules of hockey, with a slight reinterpretation by Miss Crochet.

On the arrival of a gum-chewing young American girl to the school, because her parents cannot control her, Miss Crochet makes a concerted effort to integrate the young girl into the school's way of life, but all little Gemima Grant's aim is to disrupt in order to gain attention to herself. Only after her expulsion, does Gemima realise the influence that Miss Crochet had on her, and how, although Miss Crochet's discipline might be regarded as strict, there is a moral behind the methods that are used.

It is only through Miss Crochet's own upbringing that she is able to understand what girls at a boarding school go through and it is through that understanding that she is able to mould these young girls to become society's leaders of the future.

THE GIRLS OF ST CATHERINE'S is a combination of hilarious moments and serious consequences. The novel will be a fun read for anyone who has been to a boarding school or thinking of going to one!
