Bih was a beautiful girl who had only recently come to town. She was about 14 years old and had just finished secondary school. She was supposed to move into high school now. However, thanks to the fact that her family had run into difficulties, her education was interrupted. She had to move to Douala in order to carve out a new life for herself.

While growing up as a young girl many years ago in Bafut, she had never imagined that there would be a day that she would have to drop out of school and had to fend for herself at such a young age. But as we all know, life is very unpredictable and most often than not, very tricky. Now she had to, not only fend for herself, but also for her poor family that she had left back home.

She was brought to Douala from the village by a distant uncle, Mr. Ngwa, who had promised to teach her a trade. He did keep to his promise and enrolled her into a tailoring school as soon as she got into the city. She was doing fine and her new mistress at work always spoke highly of her. She was supposed to be there for two years, perfect her skills and then start up her own business. But that was not to be. One day, she stopped going to work and her Madam became very worried. So, she called her on the phone.

"Madam, good afternoon." She spoke.

"Good afternoon, Bih. How are you? Why have you not been to work these past couple of days?" She asked.

"Madam, my uncle's wife said I shouldn't come again."

"Why?"

"She said there is no one to stay at home with the kids when she goes to the market. So, she wants me to stay at home while she goes to the market."

"What? Have you told your uncle about that? Is your uncle aware of the new arrangement?"

"Yes, Madam, but he hasn't done anything about it. He is afraid to annoy his wife."

"Have you told your parents back in the village?"

"Yes, I have, but they have no choice. They don't want me to come back to the village. So, my mother has asked me to endure for the time being."

"Oh! I am so sorry. Anyway, I hope you come back soon. I wish I could do

something, but I can't."

Bih was a child who naively came to the city, went through troubles that were not commensurate to her age, but against all odds, weathered all the storms and ended up marrying the unlikely love of her life, Michael.
