Zyla Tahi recounts what was going through the mind of this Marquesian guide, a distant descendant of the cannibals of Nuku Hiva, when he killed Stefan and violently assaulted his companion.

In the course of narrating this murder, Zyla Tahi retraces the history, spanning centuries, of the cannibals of Nuku Hiva who captured and ate those who ventured onto their island.

PART 2: STAY OF JOSEPH KABRIS IN NUKU HIVA, by Joseph KABRIS

A True Story!

In 1795, Joseph Kabris found himself stranded on Nuku Hiva, a remote island in the South Pacific that had been discovered just three years prior. He was neither killed nor eaten by the cannibal tribes but, on the contrary, was adopted by the island's chief. He became a part of the tribe's communal life, got married, and had children. He was tattooed from head to toe. He recounts the fierce battles he participated in, where the victor would eat the vanquished.

In 1804, a Russian explorer, who wanted to bring a "savage" to the Tsar of Russia, forcibly took him aboard his ship.

In his short account, Joseph Kabris describes life on Nuku Hiva during a time when European colonisation had not yet erased ancestral customs and introduced Christianity.
