Egbaland is one of the prestigious towns that broke out of the Old Oyo Empire in the Yoruba Kingdom, South-western Nigeria. After fleeing from Oyo, they settled in the surroundings of the famous Olumo Rock. The rock provided shelter and safety for the people of Egba during wars and attacks. This brought about the name "Abeokuta" which means beneath the rock.
