The Red Room by H.G. Wells
An anonymous protagonist chooses to spend the night in a supposedly enchanted room in the castle of Lorraine. It tries to refute the legends that surround it. In spite of the vague warnings of the three sick custodians residing in the castle, the narrator ascends to the "Red Room" to begin his nocturnal vigil.
Initially confident, the narrator becomes increasingly uncomfortable in the room. Try to overcome your fear by lighting candles, but keeping the candles lit in the empty room becomes a continuous battle. Each time a candle goes out, the narrator's fear increases. Begin to imagine that the drafts are guided by an evil intelligence. When the narrator's fear reaches a crescendo, he stumbles over a large piece of furniture (possibly the bed) and bounces off the walls in a blind panic; hitting his head and eventually falling unconscious. The caregivers, who meet him in the morning, feel vindicated when the narrator accepts that the room is enchanted. They are eager to hear a description of the ghost, but he surprises them by explaining that there is no ghost living in the room. The room is tormented by fear itself
