Teaching Your Children Respect

Anyone raising and training a child or children knows how very difficult things can be at times. Sadly, many homes and families these days are plagued with children tilting towards disrespecting and dishonouring their parents.

The Word of God in Micah 7:6 paints the perfect picture of what is happening in several homes and families today.

Micah 7:6

For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house.

It is the responsibility of parents to train and build up their child to be respectful and well mannered. Raising and training children to be respectful takes a very huge percentage of parenting. A child is not considered to be well brought up if the he or she lacks respect.

It is the responsibility of children to listen to their parents and attend to their words. This is revealed in Proverbs 4:20.

Proverbs 4:20

My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

It is also the responsibility of the children to honour (respect) their father and their mother. This is revealed in Matthew 19:19

Matthew 19:19

Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Obedience is connected to respect and vice versa. Sadly, many kids do not take to the way of respect and obedience. They tilt towards waywardness and rebellion.

A child may tend towards disobedience and waywardness if that child lacks respect. This includes lack of respect for parents and elders, lack of respect for him/herself, lack of respect for others and lack of respect for constituted authourity, law and order.

However, if you can teach your child to respect you, themselves and others, then teaching them to obey is much simpler. When a child respects a parent then they will obey out of love instead of obligation.

If you can teach your child to be respectful, you are sure of a cordial relationship with that child. Smooth, loving and open communication is enhanced and the child is able to be guided to achieving greatness in life.
