Anthony Throllope (1815-1882) was an English writer, one of the most influential writers of the Victorian Era. In his works he portrayed the most sufficient problems of his time: political, social and family issues. The author tended to follow the traditions of English humorous writers and depicted the day-to-day life of the contemporary English clergy which was a sufficient part of the English society. The American Senator by Anthony Trollope is a novel written in 1875 considered to be the best known works. Trollope made a great description in his work of rural English life and detailed scenes of fox hunting. This main plot is pleasant enough to read and the main protagonists are all likeable characters. However, the real treat of the novel actually comes with its sub-plot, the story of the machinations of anti-heroine Arabella Trefoil. The novel has a slow start, but please do persist through that because you will then get to the point of meeting the delightfully naughty Arabella and be introduced to one of the most complex, intriguing and ultimately endearing female characters in literature.
