The Burgess Animal Book For Children (Illustrated)

The Burgess Animal Book For Children introduces children to many of America's mammals through a conversation between Mother Nature and many of the animals who attend her school to learn about each other. It has 48 illustrations, many of which show two animals; 37 of which in full color. Illustrations were drawn by Louis Agassiz Fuertes. After John Audubon, Fuertes is considered as one of the most prolific bird illustrators.

In addition to the original 48 color illustrations by Louis Agassiz Fuertes, this book contains an additional 21 illustrations of animals and birds that enrich the reader's experience. The book also contains a short biography of Thornton Burgess and a complete annotated bibliography of Burgess' work.

It is very interesting to note that Mother Nature does not ignore the reality that some of the animals discussed in the book prey on each other. What's important, perhaps, is that Burgess presents the issue as a simple matter of fact. It is not the central theme of the book. Therefore, it will not scare children, but neither will it leave any doubt in their minds that some animals kill other ones.

Thornton Waldo Burgess (January 14, 1874 June 5, 1965) was a conservationist and author of children's stories. Burgess loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years in books and his newspaper column, "Bedtime Stories". He was sometimes known as the Bedtime Story-Man. By the time he retired, he had written more than 170 books and 15,000 stories for the daily newspaper column.
