PREVIEW:
It had been a long, tiresome day of class. I was shuffling my feet, slumping my shoulders, and barely even making it down the sidewalk, the load of books heavy on my back. It was my second semester at college, Ford State University, and I was trying my best to make up for my lackluster performance the first semester. That meant going to every class, studying, and skipping parties. Easier said than done.
I made it to the corner of the Quad and pressed the button that made the light change so I could cross the street. Then I looked both ways and realized it was so late that there was no traffic. I shook my head and grinned. I had definitely spent way too much time in the library, and the computer lab, and the quiet corner of my apartment. But I wanted to get my grades up to at least a B average.
I snapped myself out of the hazy zone I was in and stepped off the curb. Just when I put my foot on the opposite sidewalk I heard an engine rev dangerously high, followed by the awful screech of tires, then a slamming door.
Before I could even turn around, hands were on me, gripping my arms like steel cuffs, at least four of them. I tried to wrench myself away, but then two more sets of hands grabbed my legs.
I looked at my kidnappers, all dressed in black with black ski masks. My heart started pumping. I was being kidnapped!
I saw the open door of the dingy van idling at the curb. I started to fight, jerking my arms back and forth, kicking and pulling my legs, but these men were strong and it felt like I was trying to swim through Jell-O. They wouldn't relax their grips and we all went into the back of the van.
That's when it got really weird.
We've all seen the backs of those kidnapper vans. They aren't always used by kidnappers, and the ones I've seen were usually just empty back there, no carpet, no seats, no panels on the walls, no headliner. Not this one. This one had more buttons inside than an F1 racecar, it was more sophisticated than an airplane cockpit. I stopped struggling for a moment just to look at it all.
The men tossed me in the back and I was already twisting in the air, readying myself to attack them, but as soon as I hit the floor of the van I was stuck. I couldn't lift my head or my arms or my legs. I couldn't lift a finger. It wasn't sticky, I was just frozen, like some imaginary forcefield was holding down every inch of me.
I heard the men talking, and my heart really started thumping when I realized they weren't talking. They were communicating with each other, but it wasn't English, or Spanish, or German, or any other language I had ever heard. It was a series of clicks and pops and humming sounds.
As far as I could move my eyes I saw them all sit in various places on these tiny little stools that seemed to come out of the control panels around the van.
Then we started moving. This was no ordinary van. Just by feel, I could tell we were accelerating hard. This thing was moving, then it started to shake, to the point I thought it might come apart. If it did come apart I couldn't decide if that would be bad or good for me. It didn't, and all of a sudden it smoothed out to perfection. I knew what that meant, we were in the air.
I guess all the men felt safe now that we were in the air because they all took off their masks. I could really only see two of them, but that was enough. They had gray skin, like lizards, giant oval eyes as dark as night, and tiny slits for a mouth, and even tinier slits for nostrils. The ne
