McManus has a large audience on the subject of poker, including approximately 1.5 million worldwide readers of his 2003 novelistic memoir and his 2009 history of the game.
Four of the seven stories in this new collection involve poker.
Extremely autobiographical, these stories take place between 1957-1965, and are set in the Bronx and Lisle, IL. Poker playing and current events/pop culture of the time are discussed extensively, including Kennedy's assassination, family lifestyle, adolescent sexuality, etc.
McManus is the author of the New York Times bestselling Positively Fifth Street, which also reached #2 on Amazon's bestselling list, behind only a new Harry Potter. The book is now in its 17th printing.
For Positively Fifth Street, McManus, on assignment from Harper's Magazine, was sent to Las Vegas to cover the trial of Rick Tabish and Sandy Murphy, who were accused of murdering Binion's Horseshoe casino executive Ted Binion. The trial coincided with the 2000 World Series of Poker, which McManus entered. He won a satellite tournament into the Main Event, and reached the final table, placing fifth.
