Essayes or Counsels, Civill and Morall, was published in 1625 with 58 essays. Translations into French and Italian appeared during Bacon's lifetime.
Of all Bacon's writings his Essays have been the most widely read. They have been, in the best sense of the word, popular. His most famous work, the Novum Organum, has been accepted on the verdict of the few ; for one student who has attempted it, there have been stores and scores who have read and re-read the Essays. ' Of all my other works," says Bacon himself, ' they have been the most current;' and this, which was said only of the earlier and shorter editions, could be said of them more truly than ever in their final and finished form.
