In the city of Bayhaven, Massachusetts, there is a secret Community of people that have the ability to manipulate energy. They are descendants of those that were persecuted in Salem over one hundred years ago, and now they are being killed again only this time, maybe by one of their own.

Dane Brown knew the best and worst of life. He didn't have the easiest childhood, being the bastard son to the town's patriarch, but he was beloved to his two brothers and sister, a favorite "Donovan" amongst the town, and he was lucky enough in his teenage years to find his soulmate in the town sweetheart, Claire deVries. But Dane harbored a secret: he had the ability to absorb other people's abilities to manipulate energy, a power that had long been feared by the Community. Because of his extraordinary power, he felt this incredible internal pressure to protect those he considered his. So he followed his best friend into the Army and lost his girl in the process. Years later a decorated veteran Green Beret, he came home scarred, both body and mind. And there was Claire, still perfect and still pissed at him.

Claire deVries grew up quickly when she forced her true love to chose her over honor. She had always held up hope that someday, someway, she'd make things right between her and Dane. Then he came home, changed. He was no longer the carefree boy of her dreams, he was now the moody, brilliant, sensitive, protective, powerful man and she had no way to win him back.
