Grace James was an English writer, who is best known as the author of adventure stories for children. Grown up in Japan, Grace James was considered in her time and still remains nowadays as one of the most famous collectors and retellers of stories from the Japanese folk tradition. "The Fire Quest" is a tale, entered in the collection of Japanese Fairy Tales, published in 1910. The story is about the wise poet, who sits reading by the light of his taper at night and observes the moths, cockchafers and dragon-flies, who all come upon the Fire Quest. All they fly up too close to the flame and so die. And the grieved Poet decides to narrate them one enlightening tale about the Firefly Queen.
