The First Expedition

The world is a barren wasteland, destroyed by the Wild Magic that went rampant during the Apocalypse. At least that is what the inhabitants of the great floating city of the Skylands believe. Protected from the onslaught by the Great Barrier, their society has flourished for six centuries, powered by the vast geyser of magic erupting from the ocean below. But the Skylands has outgrown the geyser and magic is now in short supply. Without enough magic to run the vast factories not everyone has food or even basic amenities. Armies of thugs and mercenaries roam the monolith to scavenge or steal what they can and the Guard seem powerless to stop them. Enter Kyra Zorantis, a young mercenary that is average in almost every way except for her armaments. Sometimes it is beneficial to have grown up with a genius Magineer as a best friend who could enhance her wargear without demanding the exorbitant fees most artisans would expect. Our hero is circling the drain, murdering and fighting to earn enough money to survive another day. Another day that kills off a sliver of her humanity by the atrocities she must commit to avoid the same fate. When the Barrier is knocked down one stormy night and the Skylands are invaded from Outside the revelation that there were living beings Outside rocks the monolithic city to its core. An expedition is hastily assembled, and our hero earned a place among its ranks. What could possibly have survived the Apocalypse? And do they have the resources that are now so sorely lacking on the Skylands? Kyra Zorantis is determined to find out, not out of love for her home but for the hope of finding a new home for her and her small remaining family. What she finds is so much more than her wildest imaginings.
