Buck Hill was hated by everyone except his parents, who thought he could do no wrong. He cheated at cards, bullied the sharecroppers and molested his sisters. He was as vile a person as could be imagined. Because of this, when he was murdered everybody was a suspect and nobody was saddened by the news. Even the parents were anxious to push it aside.
This was a time when the Great Depression was just ending and WWII was just beginning. It made for a prosperous time for those who worked to support America's war machine. Buck was one of those who prospered by supplying food products to a hungry military. It was all legal and even made his father a nifty profit; even after Buck skimmed his portion off the top.
