The Hills of Hebron tells the story of a group of formerly enslaved Jamaicans as they attempt to create a new life in the utopian, anti-colonialist community of Hebron. However, a grab for power ensues when it is revealed that Rose, the wife of leader of the Church of New Believers, who has taken a temporary vow of chastity, is pregnant.

Miss Gatha, Rose's adoptive mother, makes a play to have her deformed son inherit his rightful place as leader of the New Believers over the disgraced church leader, Obidiah, even as he protests his innocence. Set in 1950's Jamaica, the novel depicts Hebron as a Revivalist community embracing Afro-Caribbean religious practices and gives voice to the social forces of that period in Jamaican and Caribbean history.
