The History of Guns

Weapons have been used since the beginning of civilisation. Primitive designs used for hunting animals led to weapons that were used for defence and warfare. Before guns came bows, spears, crossbows, hand axes, clubs, swords, daggers and many other implements, designed with the sole purpose of inflicting terminal injury on the unfortunate recipient.

The history of the development of guns throughout the centuries is intrinsically linked to historical military events from the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Battle of Pavia in 1525, the French Revolution in 1789, the American Civil War in 1861 to World War I and World War II in the 20th century, taking us to the requirements
and developments that warfare in the modern world dictates today. The impact that guns have had on world history is most certainly profound.

The History of Guns is a fascinating and of course vast subject. This is not a catalogue of every model of every gun through history to date, but instead looks at the historical evolution of generic categories of guns together with who, how and why key gun design changes were developed and implemented over the centuries.
