The Hitches of Childhood is a novel written by Ngoanannete D. Lekhanya, a Bed student at NUL 2006-2009. The novel tells the story of how T'sepo who starts school in the absence of his father, Michael. Michael seems to have been swallowed by the mines in the Republic of South Africa. He is growing up around his mother, 'Mat'sepo, and grandfather, Teboho. T'sepo fails to recognise and accept Michael as his father when he eventually joins the family. The fact that Michael does not come home voluntarily from the mines like other men, but is collected by 'Mat'sepo does not, in T'sepo's view, show Michael's commitment and love for his family. Michael joins the family disposed and is confined to the wheelchair, thus making it difficult for him to fend for his family; neither does he even have a chance to make up for neglecting his duties as a husband, father, and son.
