Suddenly fed up, Kali snatched her hand free. The weirini looked at her impatiently, but she took a defiant step back. "Who said I'm coming with you?!" she yelled, and the weirini glanced irritably, fearfully in the direction of the soldiers.
"I find you half-dead in the garbage," Kali went on loudly, "and suddenly, soldiers are looking for both of us and I don't why, and you want me to just come with you to fight them - a complete stranger." She paused as she realized, "I don't even know your name."

"Are you crazy?!" Kali squeaked.
"That's the third time you've asked me that," said the weirini in much amusement.
"And you still haven't answered!" Kali shrilly returned.

Kali glanced around and could see trees frozen in the act of swaying, their leaves swirling to a sluggish stop as if they were under water. Birds had halted in the sky mid-flight, and indifferent chickens and cows were frozen in the act of indifferent standing. The black horses of the soldiers had halted in the act of snorting and stamping, and the red ribbons that lifted from the soldiers' spears were stiff in their waving.
