Inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942, Louis Guenther requested assignment to the U.S. Army Air Forces, where he was trained as an engineer and top turret gunner for the B-17 heavy bomber. Assigned to the 447th Heavy Bombardment Group in England, he completed several missions before his plane was shot down over Germany.
