The Mighty Purple Cottage

The Mighty Purple Cottage tells the story of a 6-year-old named Glinda. Glinda lives in a magical home with her Grandmother and older brother, Stevo. However, two monsters want to take away their beautiful home because it is not as large and grandiose as the other homes. The monsters represent anything that can take a child's home......fire, floods, or natural disasters. Each year, it is estimated 250,000 children lose a home and a home represents security. Eventually, Glinda is whisked into the sea where she meets a fancy octopus, a whale, and a school of fishes - all of whom share advice. When she comes back from her visit, the cottage is gone and a beautiful mermaid appears and tells Glinda to "Always see the best and beauty in life and you will be mighty like the cottage." She suggests to Glinda that she plant purple flowers in honor of her home and all the children who have lost homes. The Mighty Purple Cottage also has a foundation, The Mighty Purple Foundation. Each year, three children who have lost homes, are awarded $500 to purchase items that make them feel secure.

About the Author

Mia Toschi wanted to write a book about the loss of a home after her family lost their beloved home which had been in their family for more than 100 years. As an adult, it was a painful experience and as a former educator and education reporter, she realized how traumatic losing a home must be for a child.

Master Storyteller and Communications Wiz. As a television news reporter in New York City, she earned four Emmy Awards, an Association of Educational Publishers Award, and a Grace Allen Award. She is also the author of Surviving Sandy, a 300-page book detailing Hurricane Sandy, and a contributor to the Huffington Post.

Mia recently penned the book, "The Mighty Purple Cottage" about a child who loses a home, and formed a foundation called "The Mighty Purple Foundation," to provide financial assistance to children who have lost a home to flood, fire, or natural disaster. A portion of the proceeds of the book are donated to the foundation.

Mia also contributes to the Huffington Post and other media outlets and can be frequently "heard" as a voiceover artist.
