"The Night Life of the Gods" is a humorous novel set in an English family home. Mr. Alfred Pollard Lambert had lost his wife's fortune in a series of business misadventures. This fact had left him no choice but to find refuge for him and his dependents, in the previously tranquil home of his brother-in-law Hunter Hawk. But now the rest of the family is on their last nerves due to his constant experiments that frequently end up in explosions. Matters come to a head when after one such explosion the family decides to confront Hunter about the noise that is the talk of the community.
