The year is 1812 and eighteen-year-old Helene Hollis has always felt like the ugly duckling in comparison to her two older sisters. Unlike Corrine and Audrina, who both had multiple suitors before marrying, Helene has none and worries she'll become a spinster. After all, as a part of the New York social circle, her family has a reputation to maintain, something the two older girls have nearly tarnished.

Helene hatches a plan to make men fall at her feet and enlists the help of her best friend's brother to carry it out. She wants the dashing Zachary Easton to teach her the pleasures of the marriage bed and then choose a husband for her.

Zachary Easton is not ready to marry. When his little sister's friend, whom he has known since childhood, wants him to take her to bed, he makes it clear that he will not be asking her to marry him. So, she asks him to choose her husband for her. That's fine with him, until the suitors actually begin to pay attention to Helene. Is it too late for him to admit what he's just realized himself that he is madly in love with his little redheaded student?
