Richard Deddhigh, a one legged, one eyed cripple person's dream is to become a pirate. A mysterious stranger comes into his life and he is left with a riddle, written on an old, faded parchment. He seeks the answer to the riddle and embarks on a dangerous journey to a fishing village that is virtually controlled by pirates, smugglers and cutthroats.
An old hag, Sally Barfoot, befriends him and although offering advice and help, does not reveal that she knows a lot more than she admits. A web of deceit, thievery, kidnapping and murder follows.
