Is the pot of gold at the foot of the rainbow, or do you find it along the way? At the age of seventeen, Penny and Emil start to find the answer in their love for one another, but it is the time of High Apartheid in South Africa and Church and State are in cahoots to control a nation's thinking. The two youngsters challenge the biblical account of creation and also discover the many discrepancies in the accounts of Jesus in the Gospels. Emil is incorrectly arrested on a charge of assault and battery, which results in a restraining order being served on him: he may not contact Penny in any way. Four years later they meet again in Grahamstown during the Arts festival; she is doing a postgrad in journalism and he is busy with an honours degree in zoology. His mother has since remarried and her husband has adopted Emil as his own son. They find that they are still very much in love, Penny moves in with Emil and starts developing her talents and turning their cottage into a happy home. However, the political situation is volatile and they are attacjed from different sides....
