An advanced breed of human has been developed on Crone. Before he was exterminated by his grandson, Roman Archer and two of his followers had harvested their own seed to create a new species of hybrid. The species are collectively known as Romanites, in honour of their creator. After several generations of in-breeding and scientific intervention, the reptilian gene has been diluted and the R3 Romanites are impossible to distinguish from other human beings. They are coming to Earth via portals and their aim is to surreptitiously destroy those that refuse to adhere to the Apophis law. Matteus and Zenian are instructed by the Aglorean elders to seek out the hybrids and eradicate them. Matteus becomes fearful that Roman could have tampered with the DNA of his own family members in the early stages of the experiment. They dust off the 'Cribinator', the crumbling time machine, and go back to the past. Again, Matteus relies on the support of his family as his gift often feels like more of a curse than a blessing
