The Science of Teaching

This book logs a personal journey of a career in science teaching and education . It begins back in 1971 when I first thought of getting my teaching credentials. It continues when I come face to face with 120 high school students in 4 different classes at an urban high school. As the journey unfolds, I begin to research methods used to successfully get kids to engage in the learning process. I explore a method that dated back to Confucius when he said, "I hear, and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." As I journey forward, I begin to let go of my ego and immerse myself into discovering what good teaching is all about. I delve into the world of lesson design and instructional strategies that promote critical thinking and opportunities for students to take chances. And at times, construct their own meaning. Instruction and design strategies that support the ethos that all students can learn and achieve at high levels. This book contains some do's and don'ts. At best it's a resource filled with suggestions and anecdotal evidence from experiences spanning over forty years ranging from elementary to middle school to high school and eventually as a science administrator. My hope is that this reading gets you to think about how to teach and not just science. The goal is to provide you with some additional instructional tools for your teaching tool kit and get you to question your own practices.
