For six years, Miss Mary Morstan has been receiving mysterious gifts in the mail on the anniversary of her father's disappearance. The final gift, accompanied by a letter asking to meet, prompts Mary to seek out the advice of Sherlock Holmes. Bored and restless, the consulting detective jumps at the chance to track down stolen treasure, with his trusted friend John Watson along for the ride. Can they solve the mystery without risking their lives in the process?

Although not an instant success, The Sign of the Four found a new audience after Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories in the Strand made Holmes and Watson household names. One of only four full-length novels featuring the characters, it was published in February 1890.
