Aglaope was born on a barren island, trapped by the gods and cursed to sing passing ships to their doom, that she and her mother and grandmother might live on the sailor's scavenged food and supplies.

But the times of plenty are behind them. The great war between Achaea and Troy has ended, and the heroes who for so long sailed in such large numbers have returned home at last, leaving few ships to answer the call of Aglaope's song. Worse still, the sirens have angered the witch-goddess Circe by unwittingly crashing one of her own supply ships upon their rocks.

Starving, forsaken, and lost, still Aglaope sings. She sings for a ship with a hero brave enough to sail his way through the rocks of her island. A hero favored by the gods who might rescue her from a life that is no life at all.

She sings for Odysseus-Akheloios. And until he arrives, she must do everything in her power to survive.

This novella was originally published as part of A SEA OF SORROW: A NOVEL OF ODYSSEUS. This re-release is revised and expanded to bring it into the world of HELEN OF SPARTA and TAMER OF HORSES.
