When young Manawyddan ap Cadmael is awakened by the war drums on the eve of Samhain, he is plunged into a series of momentous and mysterious events that will test his character, his beliefs and his prowess. Wyddan, as he is known to those close to him, is an orphan, coming of age as ward of the court of Heffaid Hen, ruler of the kingdom of Dyfed. Wyddan has spent the majority of his life in the company of Heffaid's heir Pwyll, and Rhiannon, Heffaid's daughter. He finds the pillars of his life: his loyalty to Pwyll, his yearning for Rhiannon and his desire to join the ranks of respected warriors relentlessly battered by a one disaster after another.

As Wyddan struggles to defend Pwyll and Rhiannon from the usurper Gwawl and his fearsome henchman Llwydd, he is helped by both known and unknown forces. When he and Rhiannon flee into the daunting Annwn Forest, they encounter a world that they had not believed to exist. Ellyllon (elves), corrach (dwarves), bwica (brownies), drgaons and trolls enter their lives as they are caught up in a maelstrom involving forces both natural and supernatural.

Conflict, loss and passion shape Wyddan as he battles dangerous foes, encounters new truths and discovers the wonder and pain of real love. Rushing headlong toward either survival or extinction, he finds that ultimate salvation and truth must be found within.
