Peru, 1532. Atahuallpa has been captured and executed, a puppet Inca put in his place. Far to the north, flames crackle and screams ring out as a renegade band of conquistadors bring rape and destruction to a remote mountain village and the Chosen Women cloistered nearby. When the Spaniards ride away they leave few survivors and those few know that they are still in danger. This time from Inca law. A youth, Uxmal, is chosen to take their case for life to the new Inca.
Desperate to get back to his family, Uxmal is trapped in the politics and violence of the Spanish take-over while the villagers head out in the one direction that offers a chance of escape, to carve a new life outside the Inca realm, deep in the Amazon jungle. But here the locals, the wildlife and even the land itself seem determined that they should not survive.
