In 1989 Kate McConnaughy, a young psychologist begins a job at the South's largest mental hospital. Although she is burdened by her own set of losses and disappointments, she becomes fascinated with the forgotten patient cemetery and the story behind the double headstone inscribed with "1957-Death Could Not Part Us." Kate eventually unravels the mystery of the young lovers and finds her own redemption. This historical novel spans more than thirty years and is told by the characters whose lives were intertwined with the asylum.
