As a result, a ring of sunlight, known as the "ring of fire," is visible around the Moon's silhouette. Annular eclipses happen when the Moon's apparent size is smaller than that of the Sun, allowing sunlight to form a bright ring around the darkened Moon.

Solar eclipses can only occur during the new moon phase, when the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun along the same plane, known as the ecliptic. The alignment must be precise for an eclipse to occur, with the Moon's shadow falling on Earth's surface. The path of totality, where a total solar eclipse is visible, is typically narrow and moves across the Earth's surface as the Moon's shadow travels at high speeds.

Observers must take precautions when viewing solar eclipses to protect their eyes from harmful solar radiation. Direct viewing of the Sun, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage. Specialized solar viewing glasses, solar filters, or indirect viewing methods, such as pinhole projectors, are recommended for safe eclipse viewing.
