The Sioux call it makha makhoche, a mysterious land filled with gigantic birds and glowing trees. White men call it The Land. Winona, the daughter of a Sioux chieftain is the first person to disappear through the gateway to this fantastic place, followed by her lover, Napayshni, and later others, both Sioux and white men.
Almost one hundred years later, Jacob Wheeler disappears with the payroll from the Marshall mine, and is never seen again. Two years later, his wife, also disappears, leaving behind a fourteen-year old daughter. Nowadays, folks I Marshalltown still remember how the Wheelers stole that money. Hardly anyone believes the legend about the portal.
Sondra is one of the few believers left. As a child, she and her best friend almost got sucked through it while they were playing in the mine.
She is convinced that her great-great grandparents couldn't have stolen the town's money. They must have been transported to the Land.
The only way to prove it is to go there. Can she still find the portal?
And if she does, will she ever return?
