Through the Eyes of the Soul

In this publication, interested individuals can find a comprehensive collection of photo essays on the multi-faceted celebration of All Souls Day in Mexico.  Award-winning Photojournalist Mary J. Andrade has published the third of a five-part bilingual series of books titled: "Through the Eyes of the Soul, Day of the Dead in Mexico," "A través de los Ojos del Alma, Día de Muertos en México."

To write this book, the author visited museums, galleries, and cultural centers in Mexico City for two years in a row, photographing the activities involving the preparation in some of the markets in the capital, as well as the altars. On following years she traveled to Mixquic and to the State of Morelos where she visited Hueyapan, Xoxocotla, Yecapixtla, Ocotepec, Cuentepec and Cuernavaca with the purpose to establish similarities and differences of the rituals that take place during the celebration of Day of the Dead.

The text, written in English and Spanish, explains the contrasts between the celebration of Day of the Dead in Mexico City and the towns in Morelos, the difference between the altars artistically designed in the museums and galleries in Mexico City and the traditional ones in Ocotepec, Morelos. It offers the introduction written by Lic. Maria Esther Schumacher, who was one of the founders of the Mexican Communities Abroad Program of the Secretary of Foreign Relations, and also includes two poems allusive to the tradition written by the Spanish poet Julie Sopetran, plus descriptions of each element on the altars as well as the recipe of the traditional offering of pan de muertos.

Mrs. Andrade has devoted her life to the research of Day of the Day.  Her passion knows no borders.  She's recognized as an international authority on Day of the Dead, a celebration so unique in its form, that the UNESCO has named it a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. 

Continuando con la publicación de la investigación realizada durante varios años sobre la forma de celebrar el Día de los Muertos en México, la periodista y fotógrafa Mary J. Andrade publica el tercer libro de la serie "A través de los Ojos del Alma, Día de Muertos en México", en el que cubre la Ciudad de México, Mixquic y diferentes poblaciones y ciudades ubicadas en el estado de Morelos.

Mary Andrade visitó museos, galerías y centros culturales en la Ciudad de México por dos años seguidos, para continuar después hacia Mixquic y luego a diferentes poblaciones del estado de Morelos, donde visitó Hueyapan, Xoxocotla, Yecapixtla, Ocotepec, Cuentepec y la capital del estado, la ciudad de Cuernavaca, con el objetivo de establecer similitudes y diferencias de los rituals que se realizan durante la celebración del Día de los Muertos.

En el texto inglés y español presenta los contrastes entre las celebración del Día de Muertos en la Ciudad de México y las poblaciones en Morelos, la diferencia entre los altares artísticamente diseñados en museos y galerías en la capital mexicana y los tradicionales que se confeccionan en Ocotepec, Morelos. Presenta, también, la introducción escrita por la Lic. María Esther Schumacher, quien fue una de las co-fundadoras del Programa Comunidades Mexicanas en el Extranjero, de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores. Incluye, igualmente, dos poemas alusivos a la tradición escritos por la poetisa española Julie Sopetrán, la descripción de los elementos que deben estar presentes en el altar y la receta del tradicional pan de muerto.
