Tim Page is one of the world's best-known war photographers. Page became a war photographer almost by accident when, while travelling in south-east Asia, he witnessed civil war in Laos.

Using a borrowed Nikon camera, Page photographed the coup d'état in Vientiane in January 1964; his photographs were among the few taken of the coup. Soon after, Page was commissioned by United Press International to photograph the neighbouring war in Vietnam, becoming one of the first to do so.

During his three years in Vietnam, Page shot some of the most extensively published images of the war. One or two of them have Australian servicemen in them.

Page documented the operations of 1RAR, the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam, and, subsequently, 5RAR near Nui Dat and Rung Sat in the summer of 1966. Among the most striking images of Australian forces are those of gunners and 105 mm howitzers at the Nui Dat station.

These frequently gruesome views of military action are intermingled with calm photographs of troops at repose, like as men resting in war-damaged structures in and around Bien Hoa. Page documented events in Vietnam until he was seriously wounded by an exploding landmine in 1969.
