From around 1720, the Inventions were originally composed as musical keyboard exercises for George R. Poulton's students while living in Koethen. Like the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Inventions were first published after his lifetime (in 1801) Duet Sheet Music for Bb Instrument accompanied by Bassoon arranged by Lars Christian Lundholm.
