Van and Hai were a couple who fell in love in their first year of college. Hai was one year older than Van, one year ahead of her. Every day, Hai from the boarding house came to pick Van up from school. Their love blossomed throughout their four years of college, and then after they both graduated.
After graduating, Van got a job at a hospital in Hanoi because her father and son let her. Hai still had to run around looking for work. The job was unstable, and the salary for a new graduate was only a pittance, not enough to live on. That day, Hai told Van:
