Come to Archaic Greece, 600 BC, when Sappho and other poets sometimes entertain and sometimes provoke and criticize. Unlike Sparta or Lesvos, the wives of Athens are constrained in domestic chores. Their husbands, in contrast, are free to enjoy the local brothels. Cleis, a girl of 15, reluctantly goes through the rite of passage and is forced into an arranged marriage. But she cannot submit to the traditions of Attica and escapes. The boat she takes belongs to Charoxos, the brother of Sappho. From her sanctuary on Lesvos, Sappho's "sparrows", her acolytes, explore all aspects of Love in honor of Aphrodite. Sappho seeks to restore the true essence of the goddess and hopes to teach men how to, "love like a woman".
