One night Gill Janssen has an awful dream. She hears voices, sees a bluish light, and smells an antiseptic odour. She awakes as her friend Joanna comes to tell her that someone has broken in to the shop. It's one of the first strange events she encounters. Her former professor David Glensor lies in a coma. The police consider it a murder case, and Vicky Marshall, his assistant, is the main suspect.
Gill is suffering from memory loss. She can't remember events from her teenage years, and thinks that her own father, who left the Netherlands shortly after World War II with her mother, has something to do with it. She repeatedly dreams about her father and two German soldiers.
Inspector Jack Dafoe investigates the break-in. Gill tells him about the memory loss. He advises her to go see his friend John Edwards, a regression therapist. She agrees, then discovers the awful truth.
