All he needed was a plan, and all he got was a failed escape from his problems. Struggling to talk to the girl of his dreams, he couldn't get near her. The fact that he was homeless wasn't even the worst of his problems, there was something else, someone else determined to have the night go their way, preventing him from getting anything he wanted in the process.
The main character is intentionally a little unlikeable, and what happens to him I think many people will find laughable. But, if you reversed gender of all the characters and reconsider the story, she would be more likable, and everything that happened would be tragic. I would just like the reader to consider how dramatically different society views boys from girls in some very serious issues.
